The 5 P’s

When I was in high school I had this teacher and mentor that constantly said, “Proper planning prevents poor performance.”

I was thinking about that as I started pulling together ideas and lists for a session I am doing this weekend.

One way I work to plan before the session is to get lots and lots of ideas so if I hit a creative block I can avoid the awkward silence  with clients.

Ideas come from everyday life, movies and constantly and consistently from my Google Reader feeds.  Once I have an idea or a theme for the session I will dive into old posts from photographers I admire and look for something that will keep me going.  I have about a zillion blogs I follow and I don’t read every word but Reader has become a great resource for me.  Here is a quick look at my Reader home page.

The picture is from Voltron of Awesomeness. They are rad.

Reader allows me to star posts, email them and most of all search all of the old posts as well!  If I have an urban theme I can search for urban and get results.  If I am taking photographs with backlight I can search that too.

I created my Reader over the years by subscribing to RSS feeds of blogs from all over the country so it was not a quick process but looking back I am so glad I did it.  It has become a valuable tool.
