What scares you?

EntreLeadership (Twitter)
A person's success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations they are willing to have. - Tim Ferriss
Where better to have some uncomfortable conversations than downtown at lunch time.  Everyone on the street is busy getting to or from lunch, avoiding the homeless asking for money, catching up with old friends or avoiding the Green Peace corner.

I know, I have been there…”No I don’t have time to talk with Green Peace…Sorry I don’t have any change…” so I also know that it will be a real challenge to get people to take a moment to talk with me about their dreams.  That may just be based on my own experience so I started trying to talk with people on Monday.

Why talk with random people at lunch time? To put myself in uncomfortable conversations, to test my own assumptions and hopefully at the end take a portrait of the person I have just gotten to know.
I felt like I couldn’t approach anyone for a while so I just sat out there watching…I must have looked like a creeper… I stopped at the 7-11 to grab a quick drink and a young man started up a conversation with me about a dog a wasn’t mine.  This young man was traveling the country and seeing where the road would take him.  He was careless and happy and seemed to follow the “Secret” way of life.

That conversation with him sparked my confidence to speak with  two women chatting on the corner.  I told them a bit about what I was doing and they promptly said they were old friends who are catching up after a long time.  They both live here in town but life as they say gets in the way.

I left them and was headed back to my car when 2 paralegals agreed to let me walk with them back to their office and chat.  From what they told me they had found a great place to work and were loving almost every minute of it.  It seems that is rare in this day.

Lastly, while taking the only picture of the afternoon (below) I ran into a lawyer.  He also agreed to let me walk along like a little puppy dog and talk.  He was bright and alert and seemed to be enjoying life.  “Sometimes the judge rules for you and sometimes he rules against.”

So after all that I talked with 6 people I never would have met and ended up with one picture.

Don’t stop at finding out what scares you, ask what can I do to confront that fear?

Our fun, super busy weekend

This weekend was crazy busy.  We went to Old C’s Friday night, the Buddy Walk in Manitou Springs, toured our old high school, met up with some friends, and rounded out the weekend staying out until 3am and recovering on Sunday.

I didn’t take my camera to the evenings events because I didn’t want to worry about taking pictures all night but that is a great place and even for photo booth.

Looking through the pictures that I have it looks like I only took pictures of my wife and son but I swear there were more people around.

Every year at the Buddy Walk we get a picture with one of the stars or team Emily and Kory.  My wife had the pleasure of working along side Kory for a couple years while in Manitou so it is always great to go and spend some time with Kory and her family.

Eli’s first Buddy Walk was last year and in tradition we took his picture this year in the same pose.  Amazing the difference a year makes.

On our way back to the car we stopped and took 2 minutes for a little photo shoot.  It is hard not to take pictures of these two.

Heather has been working with Eli to give kisses.  So far he has steered clear of the wide open mouth kisses.

We closed the weekend at home with one of Eli’s favorite activities.  Empty the pantry.  He takes after his mom and starts with the slim jims.

Inspiration – Where I am finding mine…

I have been trying to surround myself with some great people and industry giants lately and such an easy way to do that is with free, pre-recorded material.
This was a great interview with Jasmine Star and Chase Jarvis.  Chase started CreativeLive which is priceless and an amazing resource for photographers and anyone who “creates”.  Jasmine is totally real, passionate and motivated.  I chose to watch this video for inspiration instead of knowing who was on the Bachelor Pad tonight.

Today I watched the College Home Run Derby and this video fit right in.

Harlow Family Portraits – Palmer Park

You may remember Dr. Harlow from a recent post about Peak Balance Chiropractic.  Melissa is our family chiropractor and has been for the last few years.  Her coworkers have been giving her a hard time about having a family picture to display in the lobby so we got together one evening and here is the result.

As you can see above working with dogs is a little unpredictable but we managed.  How could you get mad at a face like that?

Josh and Carrie - Maternity Part 2

Carrie and Josh had a great location in their home for some indoor picture which turned out great.  I convinced them to take a little trip around the area to take some pictures and I think they were pleased with the pictures outdoors as well.

Josh and Carrie–Maternity Part 1

My wife has known Carrie since high school.  It was truly an honor and pleasure to take their maternity picture for them and their first kiddo.  Here are the shots from the indoor portion of the session.  More to follow on Monday of the outdoor so be sure to check back then.
