What is “why”?

I recently watched a video on the TED website. If you haven’t checked that site out I highly recommend it. Here is a little bit about TED from their website.

“TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design

The video that I watched was Simon Sinek speaking about How great leaders inspire action. Check out the video if you have time. It will make you think for sure.

I started thinking about my “why” and other questions.

  1. Why am I working as a civil engineer and why would I build a photography business?
  2. How do I define success?
  3. How do I become successful?
  4. What are my priorities?
  5. What is the reason that people want to be around me and know what I know?
  6. Am I working for more stuff? Why do I need more stuff?

Talk about some vague questions but I think those questions are at the center of who we are and “why” we have the priorities that we do. If you have seen Facing the Giants these questions sound quite a bit like the turning point in the movie. If you haven’t seen it I recommend that you do.

In watching this video and other life events I am finding that unless I build my house on a good foundation the structure will fail. My “why” is because I am Christian and love Jesus. If He is not Lord of everything He is Lord of nothing. He is my central “why”.

In light of that central “why” it is important to create a strong and solid family life. My wife and kids look to me in everything I do.

“He said I've been watching you dad, ain't that cool
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food and grow as tall as you are
We got cowboy boots and camo pants
Yeah we're just alike, hey ain't we dad
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you”

-Rodney Atkins

I must do everything I can to have a strong foundation to be an example and encourage my family. “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

Starting with the Christ as the why and my family right there I can now look outward from the center to the “How” and “What”.

“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Matthew 6:21

All that to say that it is my desire that with photography I am able to strengthen family. For the next couple months our family has a few things taking up our time. We recently replaced all the plumbing in our house and we are trying to get the walls and bathrooms back to regular. I am also studying for a exam on April 8th that will help me move to the next level as a professional engineer and lastly I am starting to lead a mens Bible study. I beg your forgiveness if I am not posting regularly. Who knows this may be my escape and I might be here much more than I think.
